Just a Tree Stump

Over the winter we finally decided to get rid of the maple tree that was cracking our sidewalk. This stump is all that is left of it.

It does seem a bit peculiar that it is no longer there, and it did offer shade, but we will no longer have to worry about its limbs (or the whole thing) coming down in an Omaha storm, perhaps on our home.

Philippine Typhoon

Typhoon season, and this time our relatives in the northern Philippines were in the areas heavily damaged with landslides and more.

We tried calling Vicky's son in Mankayan this morning, but couldn't reach him. We did get through to her daughter's home in La Trinidad, Benguet Province, near Baguio, but the people taking care of her house were not very helpful, to say the least, so we learned nothing.

A call from Vicky's daughter (in Hong Kong) updated us a bit about how our granddaughter is doing in the Philippines. Normally she would be in the Baguio area, but at the time of the storm she was in San Fernando, La Union doing some nurses training at a local hospital.

We learned that San Fernando, La Union (about 36 hours ago) was without power, and the granddaughter was on an upper floor of the hospital to avoid the flooding. She was hungry and scared, and really wanted to be back home.

Her cell phone ran out of battery power when talking to her Mom, and without electricity, she can't recharge her phone.

Wondering how they are doing, especially our granddaughter training at the hospital in San Fernando, La Union. Don't know the name of the hospital.

Have no idea now long it will be till she can return to La Trinidad. That's near Baguio, and roads into Baguio are closed due to landslides.

We'll have to try to call the Philippines again this evening.

Update 12 October 2009:

Finally got a phone call through to Felix in Mankayan yesterday morning, our time zone.

Things are well there for our families, and that is a relief.

Also a surprise, we have another great-grandbaby on the way!

No news yet as to our granddaughter in San Fernanado La Union.

Crocheted Hat and Necktie

Crocheted Hat and Necktie

Around Christmas time I noticed this ceramic dog of ours had a green collar on. Yesterday I mentioned to Vicky that perhaps it was time to change the dog's collar to something more springlike.

Just minutes ago I noticed this dog now sports a jaunty hat and necktie in time for Easter! This looked worth of a picture and a blog entry, and here it is!

This picture is about ten minutes old ... the wonders of digital photograpy!

As I was beginning this entry, Vicky came into the room holding the camera to show me a picture she had just taken of this dog adorned with his hat and tie. I was just a few minutes ahead of her, and had already uploaded this image to the internet.

Hopefully someone will enjoy this photo and entry about homelife in Nebraska.
