Molasses Expiration?

Vicky's in the kitchen baking Best Baked Beans Ever, see recipe here. Before she added the Brer Rabbit Molasses she asked when it expired.

Hmm, no true expiration date on the label, time for a bit of internet research, and here is what I came up with.

There is a code on the bottle which says when the bottle was filled, it is in tiny numbers above the label.

As an example 01057

01 means it was filled on the first day of the month

05 means it was filled in the 5th month (May)

7 means it was filled in the year 7 (hopefully 2007, not 1997, 1987, etc.)

So in this example it was filled 1 May 2007.

Internet research says Brer Rabbit Molasses is of good quality for two years after filling, or 6 months after opening, with storage at 70 degrees.

Aren't you glad you now know this?

  1. well, yes, but what are the consequences of eating and using out of date or old molasses?
I found a can of Tate & Lyle (a nostalgic British brand of sugar importers) with a warning on it to discard on expiry 4 years past. Sure, it popped as I prised off the lid, indicating that some fermentation had probably occurred, but I tasted and I’ve now been using the rest of the contains in baking regularly with no ill effects.
